Angel? by kevcrossley Angel? by kevcrossley
This represents my very first attempt to produce a full-on utterly digitally painted bit of artwork. It's proving to be a difficult adjustment, as I do still miss the act of working traditionally... (the smell of the paint, the ink splatters on the carpet, drinking my brush-washing water instead of my cup of tea... stabbing my eyes out with pencils when it all goes horribly wrong... etc) Inspired by some of my digital arty friends, and the experience of writing and illustrating a book all about Fantasy Art, (called Fantasy Clip art.. out next Spring... pre-order now on Amazon!!) where I produced a lot of digitally painted art, I thought I should embrace the 'new techniques' or be left to rot in the gutter of antiquity with the other fallen leaves from the tree of traditional stoicism.
Yep, it's not perfect, she has a kooky face and an ass so rosey you could brown toast on it, but it's a step in the direction I need to head in, methinks.

...unless you guys think different.....??

well, it becomes a labour of love, like most paintings, problem I have is when you sit there working on something and when do you say stop. The only other thing, people say "Yeah great! really cool" but the blood sweat and tears that go into it they dont see.

As long as you can get something done for a deadline I don't think it really matters, nothings ever finished. Myself personally, I don't have the stamina to see an idea through, plus I don't have the xp and knowledge of the tools to make something look polished.

never the less, fine piece Mr. Crossley ;)

Great stuff!

Love the earthly palettes and those d00dly tree's..

Also enjoyed the time spent for ma eyes trawling around the page checkin out the detail

How much time spent on it in total?
kevcrossley Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2006
...well... the original pencil drawing took 10 hours in 2003. I did a new version of that in 2005 which took 8 hours... I then used that drawing to build this digital painting, which has taken... 20 hours or so... ah, but also there is the graphicy circle logo thing.. that took an hour to create seperately... so all in all we're looking at about 40 hours or so. No way to make a living is it?

Hi,your style is really awesome, but I too like your traditional works.Like Alien or LOTR concepts, because it's more valuable to do things older ways I think,I'm following your work for four years from now on,and you really surprass yourself Mr.Crossley and I inspired from you a lot all that time, have a nice day:)

wow! awesome! you're right about her ass-it looks like she got spanked or sunburned but the rest makes it all worth while. great work!

I like it and I know how hard itis getting used to something new, but like my Nan said "Keep at it no matter how hard it gets because if you go back you'll be missing out." So embrace the new as well as the old. Later.

Those wings are bloody gooooorgeous... so is she, for that matter, but her wings even more so. Count me a freak if you like, but I'm not the one talking about cooking toast on an angel's rosy bum. :)

...drinking my brush-washing water instead of my cup of tea...

Heh heh, I've done that more times than I care to count. Or sucked my paintbrush, forgetting there's still a big ol' dollop of paint on the end.

I'm not too fond of the drop shadow effect on the pattern circiling the image. The pattern itself is lovely, but the drop shadow looks a little too much like a layer effect and for me that detracts from the image. The pattern itself, did you make that in Photoshop or Painter or did you make it in a vector program like Illustrator or Freehand?

To put it in persepctive however, it still looks really solid.
kevcrossley Featured By Owner Oct 27, 2006
heh.. the circling pattern thing is all in Photoshop... I do a lot of this stuff for a laugh when I'm bored (I just made one that looks like a brain in cross section... watch out for it in a coming piece!).. so I thought I'd see what happened if I tried to incorporate some of it in this painting... again, for the hell of it!

I hear what yer saying about the drop shadow, and I'll bear that in mind for the one I'm doing at the moment. I'll welcome your thoughts about that when it's finished too!

Kezef Featured By Owner Oct 27, 2006
I would love to see that brain in cross section pattern.

Hey, thanks a lot for the comments peeps! I appreciate them all a great deal. My plan is to get as many of these studies done as possible... one after another in a conveyor belt of production, in the hope I'll improve with each one. If anyone has any requests.....

If this represents your first piece of entirely digital work, I can't wait to see the next... and the one after that too!

You may have a few bits that bug you as you adjust but I have to say this painting is very easy on the eye. I really like the textures and the depth created in the background with the celtic style bordering sets it off very effectively.

The figure itself is beautifully rendered and it's evident that you are extremely talented in traditional mediums, I'm sure many of the techniques you use have been translated digitally to great effect.

And I would also like to add if there is some of that butt-toast going spare count me in...
