What mediums did you use to do this? It's really well-contrasted and dynamic... love it! Gore! Mwaha! Great job, man.

Thankyou! These paintings were done using high grade watercolours, and white gouache (is that spelled correctly?) I tend to use lots of tissue, putty rubbers, toothbrushes and whatever else I can lay my hands on to 'mess up' the applied paint. It seems a lot of professional fantasy artists use acrylics, and I try to achieve a similar finish with my watercolours using whatever tricks I can come up with. It really is hard work, but the best fun you can have with your clothes on! ;)

What do putty rubbers do? And how can a toothbrush help? I know I'm always begging for advice but I'm dying of curiosity (I've already started a project in which I'm collecting as much advice as possible for other deviants and so far it's mostly you and :devalachrym:).

Hey dude!

Okay, a putty rubber (or eraser if you're not a Brit!!!) is a soft, re-shapeable eraser that is great for getting all kinds of effects. It's different to standard 'hard' erasers in that it doesn't leave bits of itself all over the paper when you use it. Instead, a putty rubber 'mops up' pencil without making a mess which is cool in itself, but because over time the rubber will get discoloured with use, you can actually use the rubber itself to make interesting marks on clean paper! You can also shape the putty rubber with your fingers into any shape you might need, the possibilities really are endless! See if you can get hold of one and have a play around!

Okay, a toothbrush... pretty simple device, with quite a few uses: Dip it in water, then pick up a little bit of watercolour paint with it... or whatever paint you are using. Then simply 'aim' the toothbrush at your paper, and brush it with your finger or thumb, causing hundreds of droplets to splatter all over the paper! I guess some artists wouldn't like this effect, as it is rather random, but I love it! It can add some interesting texture to a piece, and if you don't like certain splatters, just mop it up with a tissue or wet brush straight away! I also use a toothbrush a sa direct painting tool, as it is very brutal at applying paint to the page. This creates large, bold sweeps of colour, often splattery as bristles skip and dance against the paper... it takes a bit of the control out of painting which I think is important if you want to progress. You MUST not try to control the paint too much, sometimes you just have to close your eyes and go with the flow....

Hope that's some help dude! Happy experimenting! Oh, and MERRY X-MAS, if you do that particular thang! :D

I adore how you segmented the tail on this. It's a crime that there are only three favorites.

I almost can't believe this was crafted by normal human hands. Why aren't you off illustrating science fiction and fantasy books?! Art of this level is too out of my league to even make any kind of technical comment. I just love the design of this particular alien and the coloration.

that's wacked!! so sooooo niiiiiice :)
